DIY Moisturizing Hand Cream
In my journey to find healthier alternatives to home and health care products and in using essential oils, I thought I would look into finding a DIY recipe for moisturizer. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed my skin has become more sensitive to products AND needs something more than what I was getting in the various lotions I have tried.
This is the easiest and most effective recipe that I found. With three kids, I am constantly, washing my hands and have noticed that my skin is suffering! This recipe has worked wonderfully, I keep a small jar next to every sink so that I don’t forget to use a little bit after each wash.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Unrefined Coconut Oil
- 1/2 cup Shea Butter
- 1/2 cup Bee’s Wax (I like to use the pellets for easy measuring)
- 1/2 tsp Vitamin E Oil
- 10-12 drops of essential oils (I used lavender)
- Glass Jar (I used half-pint mason jars)
Directions:
- Combine all ingredients, except essential oil, into a glass mason jar and place into a pot of water filled about 1/2 way up the jar. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to medium heat. You can also place the ingredients in a double boiler if you have one.
- Allow the ingredients to melt, stirring through the process. I use plain popsicle sticks to stir and then discard.
- Once melted, remove the jar from the pot and set aside to cool for just about a minute.
- Stir in essential oils. If you used a double boiler, pour the mixture into containers. It will solidify quickly, so have your containers prepared and ready.
Because the lotion is concentrated with such amazing ingredients, a little goes a long way! Enjoy this wonderful recipe, and the financial savings by making yourself!

I’m not sure where I can buy Shea Butter. It sounds really good. I should better start looking for that butter :D.
You should be able to get shea butter at any health food store such as Whole Foods or Spourts. You can also order in from Amazon. Hope that helps! -Monika
I’ll order it from Amazon! Thanks!!
Hi, I was just wondering if you know how much this recipe makes?
When I made it, I was able to fill a half pint mason jar all the way to the top. There was still a little bit left over so I put it in a 1.25oz travel jar. Hope that helps! -Monika
We were suppose to turn off the stove after the pot has boiled? My mason jar exploded and the product went into the water…
Sometimes I find I need to turn the stove down a bit, but not off entirely. I’ve never had a jar explode.
