Homemade Sleep Salve
Before we moved into our new house I had a terrible time staying asleep. I had no problem falling asleep, but I would wake up several times during the night and could never get a good night’s rest. Most of this was because of the stress of moving and trying to work while living out of boxes so now that we’re all settled into our new house my stress levels are way down but I’m still waking up at least once every night. I did a little research about essential oils that could help, I tried lavender mixed with coconut oil but it didn’t help much. Then I found a sleep blend called Peaceful Sleep by NOW Foods. This blend contains a mixture of Orange Oil, Tangerine Oil, Lavender Oil, Chamomile Oil, Ylang Ylang Oil, Sandalwood Blend.
I added the blend to my basic salve recipe and applied some to the bottoms of my feet before I went to bed. It would be an understatement to say that it worked! The first night I slept so well that I snoozed my alarm (I don’t even remember doing this!) and woke up late, but I didn’t wake up at all during the night. I’ve used it every night since and have slept amazingly. Plus, the mixture is making my feet super soft, so there’s an added bonus!
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup unrefined coconut oil
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons beeswax pellets
- 10 drops of Peaceful Sleep by NOW Foods
- glass jar (I used a 1/2 pint mason jar)
Directions:
Place the coconut oil, olive oil, and beeswax in a double boiler, or heat safe glass bowl. If the jar you are using is heat safe, then you can also use this. If you are not using a double boiler then fill a small pot with about 2 inches of water and place the bowl or jar inside. Bring the water to a boil to melt the contents of your jar/bowl.
You can stir the ingredients to speed up the melting, but if you do use a long utensil because the jar will be hot. I use a bamboo skewer to stir.
Once everything is melted carefully pour the ingredients into your jar and add the essential oils. Give it a quick stir and set aside, with the lid off, to cool.
Once cool you can stir the mixture for a smooth or lotion like consistency, but this is not necessary. I left the salve hard and use the back of my fingernail to “scoop” out a bit when I need it.
