Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
Growing up my mom always made spaghetti sauce from scratch and at a young age it looked very difficult and time consuming. However recently my mom shared with me that it is actually really easy! She learned from her mother, who learned from her neighbor years ago, and now I am sharing this simple and easy recipe with you!
All of the herbs used I grow in my yard, then harvest and dry to use in my cooking. If you don’t grow herbs for cooking I highly recommend it. You don’t need a lot of room or even a yard. We have a terrible time with bunny eating our plants to all of our herbs are in pots up on tables. Most don’t need a lot of sun so you could even keep them in a window sill if you don’t have a yard or balcony.
Ingredients:
- (1) 15 oz can of tomato sauce
- (1) 15 oz can of diced tomatoes
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 white onion, diced
- 1 tsp parsley
- 1 tbsp basil
- 1 tsp rosemary
- 1 tsp thyme
- water
Directions:
Heat olive oil in a medium size pot, add garlic and onions. Sauté for 1-2 minutes, then add all other ingredients. For the water, fill one of the cans with water and add to the sauce. Let the sauce simmer for 2-3 hours on low. Stir occasionally. If the sauce turns out too thick, you can add a little water to thin it out.

That’s it! Doesn’t that sounds easy?!?! The key is to simmer the sauce for a few hours so that the tomatoes cook long enough to lose their acidity. My mom doesn’t add the diced tomatoes to her sauce, but I love it!
Hi this recipe sounds really great and convenient for busy moms! Was wondering if it’s alright to Can it for the year ? Make a couple big batches for short in time quick dinners.
Thanks!
I’m not sure, I’ve never canned anything before! I do make a few batches and store them in the freezer for later use, so I know that’s okay! -Monika
