How to Stop the Homework Struggle
Is your child coming home from school every day and crying about their homework? Seeing our children suffer is one of the hardest parts about being a parent. That’s why I try and do everything in my power to make homework easier on my kids. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way.
Distractions
In order to help your child with their homework, you must remove distractions. Sometimes it’s hard to enforce this because they enjoy watching television or playing with their favorite toy. In my experience, if your child is going to get their homework done, all distractions have to be removed.
Look Over the Homework
Helping your child is one thing, but doing it for them is another. Make sure you take the time to look over your child’s homework after they have worked on it. You can help monitor the assignments, but no one in the family can do it for them.
Set a Good Example
It’s easy to set a good example when we’re parents, but it’s also easy to set a bad example for our kids. You can set a good example for your kids by following through with that you say. If you say they get rewarded for doing their homework, then follow through. You can also set a good example with your kids by actually being organized and teaching them how to be organized as well.
Other Tips
Homework can be incredibly hard, but it’s our job as parents to help as much as possible. Make sure you’re watching out for frustrations and looking for ways to solve these frustrations. There is always room for praise, so this is another tip to establish in your child’s homework routine.
All of these tips together will help establish good homework habits with your child. The next time they bring homework home, I hope it’s more productive and less frustrating for everyone. Have any tips to add?
My oldest, who is in 5th grade, is awesome about his homework. My little guy (2nd grade) has severe focus issues and it’s not that he isn’t agreeable to doing his homework, because he is, but he has a lot of trouble sitting still and getting it done. It takes double the amount of time with him.
