How to Make a Quilted Mug Rug

This project started out as an ornament, however because it is only made a few layers of fabric it didn’t hang well on the tree. It was so cute that I didn’t want to just toss it into my scraps pile, but I wasn’t sure what to do with it. Since I always have a drink at the computer or at the sewing table, it seems right to make it a mug rug.

It’s fairly easy to make:

  1. Layer cotton batting between two pieces of fabric.
  2. Trace your shape using a washable, water soluble fabric marker. Use a ruler to make your quilting lines.
  3. Use the lines as a guide to sewing your fabric layers together.
  4. Cut out the shape using pinking shears.
  5. Wipe away the fabric marker lines.

Cute, right? It was very quick and easy to make. You could probably whip out a few for co-worker, neighbor or friend gifts.
