How To Make Aromatherapy Play Dough
For most of us, finding enough activities to do with our kids without breaking the bank for Spring Break can be overwhelming. I have a great, creative solution that kids of all ages enjoy (they do, even if they don’t admit it!). Make your own colorful play dough with a twist!
I’m sure some of you have made your own colorful play dough, but have you added fragrant essential oils? Play dough is great because it engages our tactile senses, but adding aromatherapy has wonderful therapeutic benefits. Aromatherapy works because the fragrances of the essential oils are able to reach a part of the brain called the Limbic System which is responsible for mood, emotions and the release of some hormones. When it is stimulated with the essential oils, many therapeutic benefits may occur.
What You’ll need:
- 2 C Flour
- 4Tb. Cream of Tarter
- 2 Tb. Cooking Oil
- 1 C Salt
- 2 C boiling water
- Food coloring
Directions: Mix all ingredients together and divide into 4 groups. Add the essential oils of your choice to each group. You can also add color by using food dye. I recommend using skin safe dyes so that they don’t stain your hands.
Blue: add 4-6 drops of Peppermint Oil (stress relief/mental clarity)
Purple: add 4-6 drops of Lavender Oil (calming/relaxing)
Green: add 4-6 drops of Grapefruit Oil (refreshing/cheering)
Yellow: add 4-6 drops of Lemon Oil (uplifting/energizing)
*Store in small containers or re-sealable bags.

This is such a great idea! I will have to remember it for when my son is older because he is still big on “tasting” everything. With this being scented, he might be even more inclined to try it. :)
