All Natural Homemade Body Butter

All Natural Homemade Body Butter

I have talked about my sensitive skin before on this site, how I need to use fragrance-free products to avoid an allergic reaction. I’ve shared my recipe for the castile soap body wash that I make/use and today I’m going to share another great recipe that I love – natural body butter! Truly fragrance-free body lotion is something hard to find, there is almost always a trace of fragrance in store bought lotions. I tried using coconut oil but it was just too greasy. For so long I just went without lotion to avoid the itching and irritation that fragrance caused and my skin became unbearably dry. But now, I use lotion every day!

This body butter is thick and creamy, it spreads well and because of the addition of cornstarch, it isn’t greasy. My skin is so soft and itch-free! I really cannot even describe how happy I am after making/using this lotion…you just have to try it.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond oil
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E oil (or 1-2 capsules)
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch

Directions:

  • Melt the shea butter a double boiler. Once it is all melted add the coconut oil, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the oils from heat and let them cool for about 10 minutes.
  • While the oils are cooling, mix the almond oil and vitamin e oil in a medium-size bowl.  Slowly pour in the shea butter mixture.
  • Put the bowl in the freezer and check it after about 30 minutes to see if the mixture is starting to solidify. Be sure to take it out before it becomes solid.
  • Transfer the mixture to a large mixing bowl and whip it until it becomes creamy. Slowly add the cornstarch as you are mixing. Keep mixing until all of the ingredients are well incorporated. Refrigerate for a few hours so that the mixture becomes solid.

I fill the empty shea butter container and keep it in my bathroom to use after showering. The remainder stays in a jar in the fridge. I was able to refill the small container 4 times and each time it lasted a little over 2 weeks, so 2 months altogether. Be sure to put a label on the jar in the fridge that it is not food! My husband thought it was whipped cream…

This is a great recipe! Thanks for sharing. Anyone with a candida overgrowth should probably leave the cornstarch out as it can aggravate the problem.

I’m new to DIY. I bought organic coconut oil in a jar for other uses. Can I use the coconut oil in the jar and melt it for the recipe?

Absolutely! I use one jar of coconut oil for both cooking & to make my beauty products. It should work just fine! -Monika

What is the purpose of the cornstarch?

The cornstarch reduces the greasiness of the lotion. It’s not completely necessary, so if you need/want to leave it out it won’t change the effectiveness of the lotion. Hope that helps! -Monika

This is cool! I’ve trued a few recipes for homemade body lotions and use the shea butter I bought. Question: What makes it only last two months? Addition of cornstarch? Thanks!!

What I meant was that with daily use, I run out of lotion after 2 months! I does last longer than that if you don’t use it daily. I hope that helps, thanks for stopping by! -Monika

Hi, Im in the process of trying to formulate a body butter without the greasy feeling. I understand because im using oils its natural for it to feel greasy. Im keen to try your recipe as i havent tries using corn stratch before. . I want to query about the use of corn strach, does this help the buttter to feel less greasy? but as a disasvantage it encourages the growth of bacteria?

I did add the cornstarch to reduce the greasiness of the lotion, but I didn’t know that it encourages the growth of bacteria. I use the lotion on my body (not on my face) and I haven’t noticed any problems with my skin so I’m not sure how much of an effect it will have on the amount of bacteria on my skin. Arrowroot powder might be a good alternative to the cornstarch, I will have to try this instead next time I make it!

I made the body butter on Saturday and have been using since. I LOVE it! I have very dry skin. The body butter kept my skin moisturized ALL day. Thank you for posting the recipes and the easy to follow directions.

let us know about the arrowroot vs cornstarch. I did read that Vitamin E serves as a preservative in addition to being good. I just made some body butter, not quite this recipe but came back to yours re the cornstarch as mine was greasy butter. I am waiting for it to set up in the fridge since I melted it back down to add the cornstarch. I am going to use your recipe next time.
