Last Minute Hello Kitty Party

If you follow me on Facebook, then you probably heard me talking last week about how I let my daughter convince me put together a Hello Kitty birthday party in less than 4 days. Originally for her 6th birthday we had planned to go to The Aquarium of the Pacific and then to my mom’s for dinner. But on Wednesday she told me that she changed her mind and wanted to have a Hello Kitty party at our house on the following Sunday. Maybe I was tired, or distracted but I told her yes. Hours later I realized what had happened and then went straight to Pinterest to get some ideas!

There were a lot of really great party ideas, most of which would take weeks to plan. I didn’t have that kind of time! I was able to find this set of Hello Kitty printables that looked perfect for the party. It included tent cards, favor labels, napkin rings, water bottle labels, straw flags, cupcake toppers and a banner. I went to Staples to print what I needed and I brought my own cardstock because it’s less expensive if you do. I used the water bottle labels on clear cups, the napkin rings, cupcake toppers and straw flags, which I used on Pixie Sticks. I bought all plain cups, utensils, plates and napkins to save some money.

For the food I asked my mom to bring a fruit platter and my sister to bring broccoli cauliflower salad, then we bought a sandwich tray, chips and dip at Costco. But for dessert, I wanted to make that myself. I bought two chocolate cake mixes and made cupcakes with one and then made a sheet cake with the other on a jelly roll pan.

For the cupcakes I made vanilla buttercream frosting which I piped into the center and then frosted on top. Filling the center was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Once the cupcakes were completely cooled, I filled a pastry bag (you can also use a regular Ziplock bag) with frosting then snipped off the tip and just pushed it into the middle of the cupcake and squeezed. It was hard to tell how much frosting I put in, so I just squeezed what I thought was about 2 tablespoons worth. For the second cake I made, I wanted to make cake push up pops. I had bought the Wilton Treat Pop containers a while back on sale at Target and hadn’t had a chance to use them yet.  I used a 2 inch circle cookie cutter to cut the cake and added alternating layers of chocolate cake circles and peanut butter frosting.

We rented a bounce house for the kids to play in since I didn’t have time to plan games or any other type on entertainment and it worked out just fine. All in all I think it was a great day and everything turned out good. I bought some Hello Kitty stickers for the kids to take home and everyone left with a smile of their face. Not to bad for only 4 days of planning!
