NHM Nature Gardens and Nature Lab
Today’s post is brought to you by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County via Burst Media. My family and I had a great time visiting the Nature Gardens and I’m going to share our experience with you!
A few weeks ago my family and I took a day trip to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. I have lived in Southern California my entire life and there is so much that I have not seen up until this point, the NHM is one of those places. At first my husband and I were going to visit just the two of us and make it a date, but my mom said we had to take the kids. She said they would love it, and they did!
When we first arrived, we walked around the Nature Gardens where there every bush, flower, and tree you see was planted to attract wildlife. We saw signs in the bushes to tell us what type of plant it was as well as a few facts about the plants. Throughout the gardens we saw several butterflies and hummingbirds. It was so exciting!
Next, we went to the Get Dirty Zone where we learned about composting and the bugs that live in the soil to help our plants grow. The kids especially enjoyed this part since they were able to play in the dirt.
Then we walked over to the Edible Gardens. Now, this part was especially interesting to my husband and I. This year we started a garden where we are growing several different types of herbs, vegetables, and fruits. It was almost as if were looking at a glimpse into our future! The kids were hoping to see a few ladybugs, but we didn’t spot any on this trip. Maybe next time!
Our trip ended in the Nature Lab. When we first walked, we were greeted by this adorable tortoise. My daughter was able to feel his shell and we talked about what he ate and the habitat where he lives.
Next, we went into the Nature Labs where we learned all about the wildlife in Los Angeles. We saw specimens of spiders, lizards, birds, even coyotes!
My son especially enjoyed the large tank that held turtles. He watched the swimming around almost the entire time! This was a fun experience for all of us and we learned about so many of the creatures that live in the world around us.
Even though we spent several hours at the NHM walking through the Nature Gardens and exploring the Nature Labs there was still so much we didn’t see. My family and I plan on taking a trip back to explore the rest of the exhibits. To learn more about the exhibits and to see the daily schedule of events, be sure to check out the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
