More Than Just A Dog

Before my husband and I had kids, before we moved into our house, we lived in a little townhome just the two of us. Then one Christmas my husband wanted to surprise me with something special, so he decided on getting a puppy. He didn’t know what kind of dog to get, but he knew he wanted a small dog because we didn’t have a backyard. After looking at several breeds online, he thought that I would like to have a Pomeranian. He was right.
We named our puppy Brewster Bear, as a puppy he was a dark brown color like a grizzly bear but he grew up to be cream and orange. He has a stocking at Christmas time, we celebrate his birthday in October. In many ways, Brewster is our oldest “child.” When my oldest daughter was born, Brewster slept by her cribs each night until she was about 2 months old. When she started crying he would come into my room and start scratching at my bed to wake me up. He would sit by her when she was on her playmat, and sit right under her high chair when she would eat, just in case a crumb or two would fall over. He did the same with our 2 boys too. Brewster loves our kids so much!
Brewster is not without a few health issues, as is common with many small dogs, but we try to be proactive with his health. He is prone to hip and back problems, which have ended up in a few trips to Urgent Care. We make sure that he gets exercise every day and lots of TLC so that we are been able to limit doctor visits to check-ups.
We live in Southern California and it’s hot all year round. At the beginning of every Summer, we have to start Brewster on flea medication as the temperatures rise. It only lasts a few months when the temps are in the triple digits, but if left untreated it could lead to a full outbreak in our home! I’ve tried at-home remedies, and over the counter meds from the local market. But the only treatment that works for Brewster is K9 Advantix® II.
