Popcorn Candy Bars & Movie Night!

For the last few years we have made Friday night our family movie night. Now that the kids are in school the weekend mean so much more and its fun to end the week with a little bit of fun.We usually order a pizza and then get our snacks ready to watch our movie. Sometimes we watch a movie we’ve seen before, and sometimes we watch a new movie. This past week we decided to watch The Boxtrolls! My daughter saw the movie in the theater with her friends, but the rest of us haven’t seen it yet. For this movie night I decided to make a special snack to go with the theme of the movie using our favorite snack – popcorn!

Start with a bag of Pop Secret popcorn and cook according to the package. Empty into a large bowl and set aside. Be sure to pick out any unpopped kernels. Measure 1 cup of candy (I used M&M’s) and then line a 13×9 pan with parchment paper.

In a large pot melt 1/4 cup of unsalted butter and then add a 10 oz bag of mini marshmallows to the pot, stirring until the marshmallows are completely melted.

Pour the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn and add in the candy while you’re stirring.

Once the popcorn in evenly coated, pour the mixture into your prepared dish and set aside for 20-30 minutes to cool.

Once cool, lift the parchment paper and place the popcorn mixture on a cutting board, cut into bars and wrap each bar in wax paper.

Now it’s time to dress up these bars to match our movie theme! I printed the matching game pieces that I found on The Boxtrolls’ Facebook page using white sticker paper and cut them out. Then I cut strips of kraft paper to wrap around the bars to look like boxes and placed the stickers over the seam.

I used a lid from plain cardboard box as a serving tray and set out glasses with straws for drinks to go along with our snacks.

The kids really got a kick out of the snacks and picked the characters they liked the most. The movie was great, and the kids especially enjoyed the sweet treats. I purchased all of my snack ingredients, a 10 pack box of Pop Secret,  as well as my craft supplies and The Boxtrolls dvd at Walmart (while supplies last).

If you and your family a looking for a good movie to watch for your family night, be sure to pick up The Boxtrolls, and don’t forget the Pop Secret popcorn too!
