Reading Challenge Bookmarks (Printable)
At our house, we have a behavior chart where the kids will receive points for being helpful, kind, and caring without being asked. They accumulate points and can use them to purchase toys, get extra ice pops at dessert time, go places, etc. This system has been so successful that I wanted to try and use it as a basis for a summer reading program. Unfortunately, my kids did not inherit my love for books. It has always been a struggle to get my kids to read, we have tried so many different genres and character books. So, I’m hoping that this will help!
For each book they read, I will punch a hole in the bookmark. My kids and I talked about what the rewards could be, here are a few of the ideas we came up with for 2-3 punches:
- Ice pop
- Extra screentime
- Visit the dollar store & pick out a toy
- Candy (lollipop or snack size bag)
- Stay up 30 minutes later at bedtime
- Go to the park or playground
Here are a few ideas for when they finish all of the punches:
- Go to the movies
- Get Ice cream or frozen yogurt
- $10 to use at Five Below
- A day at the beach
I will have to figure out how to adjust the reward scale for each child since my 6th grader will have larger books available for her reading level which will take more time to read in comparison to my 1st grader. I may have to create a reward chart for each child. After I took pictures for this post I laminated the bookmarks to make sure they last through 10 books! I had no problem hole punching, if you’re concerned about that.

If you decide to use these bookmarks, I would love to know how it works out. Please comment below with your thoughts, and also feel free to share what you decided on for rewards!
How thoughtful of you to do this for your children. They will appreciate you for it when they are older.
