Stove Top Holiday Potpourri
Throughout the year I always have some sort of air freshener in my home. It may be wax melts in my living room, baking soda air fresheners in my closet, or even just a bowl of potpourri in my family room. No matter which choice, each room has some sort of scented decoration. The holidays are certainly no exception! Along with our Christmas tree and all of my holiday baking, I like to have a pot simmering in my kitchen with a homemade potpourri in it to fill my home with all of the lovely smells of the season.
Ingredients:
- 1 whole orange, 2 mini oranges (cuties), or several orange peels
- 1/2 c fresh cranberries
- 1 T whole cloves
- 3 sticks of cinnamon (a bunch of smaller pieces will work too)
Directions: Quarter the orange, then add all ingredients to a small saucepan.
Fill the pan with water, about 3/4 of the way full. Place the saucepan on the stove on the smallest burner, and turn on to the lowest setting. Be sure to check often if your pot needs more water. You can refill the water as needed, the mix stays good for weeks!
Isn’t that easy? The hardest part is remembering to check the water. You can refill the pot during the day, and when you’re done just put the lid on the pot to save it for the next day. You can also make a blend that’s unique to your taste. Adding a few sprigs of your pine tree to the mix will make a great scent, or maybe sprinkling some nutmeg to the pot. You can also try adding apples instead of oranges!
You can also pack up the dry mix, put it in a jar or glass vase and gift it to friends, neighbors, or holiday party hosts as a unique gift.
