Today is the first day of school for my kids. I know, I know. It’s well after Labor Day and most schools have already started. For whatever reason, we are the last district in the entire country to start school! Now, over the last few weeks, I’ve seen my friends and family talking online about how sad they are that Summer is over and how they will miss their kids so much, and I get that. I will miss my kids during the day, but I won’t miss the fighting and the screaming and the constant bickering. There are also a few things that I look forward to doing while they are away feeding their little brains with knowledge, things that are just so much harder to do when they are around, but add a little bit of sparkle to my day.
Eat alone – Every mom knows how golden this is. I could make each one of my kids the most amazing lunch with every single thing that they love, but the moment I sit down with my salad, they are right next to me using their little fingers to pick out the avocado, or tomatoes, or whatever part is their favorite. Even if I gave them the same dish, they would still be eating out of my bowl.
Make a drink you don’t have to share – This goes right along with the eating alone. My favorite drink is sparkling water with fruit but I can’t get more than one sip without the kids wanting to fish out the fruit or take my straw. My favorite is Canada Dry Sparkling Water. When the kids are at school I can pour myself a glass (a real glass that no one can break except me!) of the Original sparkling water and add my fruit. When they get home I can sip on the flavored variety (Lemon Lime, Pomegranate Cherry, or Triple Berry) to avoid them stealing my fruit!
Watch YOUR shows on TV – I can only watch/listen to Thomas and Friends so many times before my ears start to bleed and the shrieking of the train whistles makes me feel like I’m going crazy. Plus, I like to watch shows like Law & Order, or Bones, and these shows are not appropriate for kids so it will be nice to catch up on all of the shows that I have fallen behind on.
Use the bathroom uninterrupted – Yep, I said it. But you know that I’m right! As soon as you close that door the kids are shoving their little hands under the door and crying to come in with you. It happens to all of us and honestly, I just don’t understand it!
Paint your nails – Can you do this while the kids are at home? Sure you can. But you know that as soon as you get the first coat of polish on every single kid is going to need a snack or something to drink. Take advantage of having time to wait for the polish to dry!
Get a massage – Why? Why not! You don’t have to look for a babysitter or wait for your spouse to get home from work. Plus, it will probably be easier to get an appointment with your favorite masseuse during the week.
Eat sweets anywhere you want – Kids have the ability to hear a candy bar wrapper being opened from 5 yards away. They don’t ever hear you tell them to do their chores or to help you with the groceries when you’re unloading the car. But when it comes to candy, they are all ears. So during the day enjoy a Twix in the living room, or have a Snickers at the kitchen table. Eat your snack wherever you want, because there will be no one around that you have to share it with!
Take a nap – As a work at home mom sometimes it’s difficult to get work done while the kids are awake so I have to stay up late and work. Now that school has started, I have to wake up early too! So, while they’re at school take a little snooze to regenerate yourself. Even if you don’t work, take a nap. We all could use more sleep.
Go to the beach – Sitting at the beach is so relaxing. I love to hear the sound of the waves and soak up the sun. But the best part about going to the beach is that I won’t have to wash the sand out of anyone’s shorts except my own. If you don’t have a beach nearby, the same principle applies to a park or lake. Enjoy the scenery and relax!
Sit outside & read a book – When was the last time you read a book during the day? I read at night on the couch occasionally, but sitting outside in the sun reading a book and sipping on my sparkling water is the best feeling for me! It’s the best kind of me-time I could ask for.
If you want to add a little sparkle to your day, head on over to Walmart and grab some of the Canada Dry Sparkling Waters that I talked about. You can find it in the Flavored Water aisle.
